If your vehicle has just had a fresh spray job, whether it was a full respray, custom colour change, or minor touch-up, that new paint finish is something to be proud of. But what comes next is just as important as the work itself, and that is the proper aftercare. Here at Onyx Aim, we always ensure your vehicle leaves our workshop looking flawless but keeping it that way requires aftercare from yourself. Here is everything you need to know about caring for your newly painted vehicle, straight from our expert team.
Let the paint cure
Patience is key during the first couple weeks – while your vehicle may look ready to go, fresh automotive paint needs time to fully cure. Depending on the type of paint and conditions in our workshop, curing can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. You should avoid washing the car for at least 7–10 days after the job is complete, also, if possible, park in a shaded or covered area to protect from sun and rain.
Avoid drive-through car washes
Automated car washes may be convenient, but they can too be abrasive for fresh paint. The brushes and harsh detergents can damage the topcoat, especially before it has fully hardened. Instead, try washing by hand using a non-abrasive car shampoo and with a soft microfiber wash mitt.
Avoid Chemicals
It is best to avoid any cleaners or polishes that contain any harsh solvents or silicone, as these can disrupt the curing process and dull the finish. If you are unsure whether a product is safe, get in touch with our team, we are happy to recommend any suitable aftercare products.
Avoid parking under trees or in heavy pollution areas
Natural damages such as tree sap, bird droppings, and even industrial fallout can damage fresh paint quickly if not cleaned off promptly. In the first few weeks, these chemicals are especially risky as the surface is more porous during curing. If you notice any spots, rinse them with water and gently blot with a soft cloth – never rub.
Wait before adding vinyl wraps or decals
If you are planning to wrap your newly painted vehicle, it is important to give the paint time to fully settle. Applying vinyl too soon can affect adhesion and damage the surface underneath. As a general rule, we recommend waiting at least 30 days before adding any exterior modifications.
Proper aftercare protects your paint job from premature fading, chipping and dulling. It can also help maintain your vehicle’s value and extend the lifespan of the work that has been done. After investing in a professional spray job with us at Onyx Aim, it only makes sense to preserve that finish with a few simple habits. If you have a question or need any aftercare support, just give us a call or drop in. We are always happy to help you with any problems or queries that arise.
